Hawaiian Chieftain Battles the Californian (Sailing)

The Americas Cup, Whitbread Around the World Race, the Big Boat series--in our times, we usually think of a duel between sailing ships as a race. There's a long history of sailing ships racing, but there is probably a longer history of sailing ships actually dueling in deadly earnest --tacking, jibbing and trading shots, cannon for cannon. Armed sailing ships fought off pirates and exchanged broadsides in war. Occasionally, a revenue cutter would have to fight it out with an escaping smuggler. StepOutdoors reporter David Bolling has the story.

Looking for Speed in the Open Ocean? (Sailing)

Looking for a really fast ocean racer, a contender in the TransPac, or super fast cruiser for that trip to Tahiti? You won't need to look much further than Santa Cruz or Monterey California and the designs of naval architect Bill Lee. David Bolling is making a fast passage on the yacht Yukon Jack.

The Fastest Offshore Boat in the World (Power Boating)

Of all power boat racing, offshore racing has got to be the most challenging. The races are long, the boats are big, the speeds are high, and often the sea is anything but calm. Add to the mix of endurance, speed and rough seas a boat which has a unique drive system which is powered by two jet turbine engines and you may just have the fastest offshore racer in the world. Reporter David Bowling tells us about his visit with offshore boat builder Howard Arneson.

New with the Look of a Classic (Power Boating)

The classic runabouts of the thirties, forties and fifties have got to be some of the prettiest craft which ever traveled the waters of this country. There aren't many of those originals left, and those classics which are still on the water take a big effort to keep up. For those boat owners who want the look and feel of a classic runabout, without the hassle and expense, there is another choice. Take a look at a ClassicCraft.

A Warm Water Opportunity

Looking for a warm water fishing destination with two coasts, countless freshwater lakes and an archipelago of low islands and tidal flats? Are you ready for a place where, with just a few miles of travel, you can fish for big fresh water black bass, hard fighting ocean rock fish, pole the flats in search of barracuda or bonefish, or head offshore for a chance at some of the biggest sailfish caught in the Atlantic. You may want to fish Florida. Contrary to popular perception, Florida is not all resort hotels, amusement parks and crowded beaches; there's some great wilderness and great boating destinations.

An Island Paradise Close to Home

Dreaming of an island paradise, but you just don't have time to get away. Don't fret, just a short ways-- twenty six miles across the sea from Longbeach, California-- lies an island paradise with beautiful beaches, hiking trails, picturesque small towns, kayaking, scuba diving and great warm weather. It's Santa Catalina Island, the subject of a famous old pop tune, and the setting for countless films and television dramas. Although it's close to one of the most populated urban areas in the country, Catalina is still an unspoiled boating destination.
